This basic primer will help explain the essentials of single stock futures, what type of contracts are available, and other particulars such as contract specifications and market participants, as well as a listing of some of the many more liquid contracts offered.

Many of you have probably heard the term “single stock futures” and have wondered what type of an investment vehicle they might be. Single stock futures contracts have been available in the U.S. since 2002. Simply put, a single stock futures contract is a futures contract which represents 100 shares of the underlying stock. It trades exactly the same way as any other futures contract in that the buyer of the contract will in theory take possession of 100 shares of the stock and the seller would deliver 100 shares of the stock.
